Day 5 Practically Perfect in Every Way

I slept in a little bit today, went to breakfast and then walked over to Central Park. What an AMAZING place. I can’t believe how big it is and how you really do forget you’re in a city while you’re there.

After a couple hours in Central Park I quickly headed back to the hotel to get ready to go to the Manhattan Temple. I was lucky enough to be able to assist with baptisms. What a cool experience. The temple is quite small and our group of 25ish to do baptisms very much overwhelmed the baptistery. They were very excited that we had our own endowed men and women to assist as they were very short handed. Being with these great kids in the temple gave me a very different perspective on each one. It was such a sweet experience to lay my hands on their head and confirm them and later help them into the font. What was more amazing was how quiet that temple is right in the middle of that big city. It was a little bit of a let down to walk out the doors right back into the busy city. Many of the endowed members of our group did a session as we were finishing up baptisms. No way I could’ve done that. I would’ve been asleep in a heartbeat.

After the temple I went to take a tour of the United Nations with Erica and Kristy (tour directors, also in my ward). Spencer, Sarah Jane, Kris, and Travis also came along. It was interesting to see how the UN works and learn a bit more about them. PLUS we got to leave the US for a couple hours as the UN is international territory and doesn’t belong to the U.S. It was a fun subway experience getting there as well.

That night we went to see Mary Poppins on Broadway. I thought it was going to be cute but it was AMAZING. The play was SOOOOO good. The music was good with some old favorites from the movie as well as new songs that have very quickly become my favorites. The story has differences from the movie but I enjoyed the story line.

Probably the most amazing part of the play was the set. It was like watching a magic show happen. Mary Poppins pulled things out of her carpet bag on stage, a bed appeared out of nowhere, the kitchen put itself back together during “A spoonful of sugar”, Burt walked up the wall and then danced on the ceiling during “Step in Time” and Mary Poppins of course floated into the audience with her umbrella. It was fascinating. I was so happy by the end of the play that I was in tears. Good entertainment is such an exhilarating thing.

Afterwards some of us decided to venture over to Serendipity for frozen hot chocolate. We were so excited and navigated our way over through the tunnels of subways (one of which was so far down below ground I wasn’t sure we would ever come back up). We arrived and found there to be over an hour wait. We didn’t want it that badly and we were tired so we made our way back over. At one point Alec got on the subway and we didn’t so he waved to us pitifully as the subway took off. He met us at the next station. We laughed really hard at how he looked as the subway pulled away. We got home to our hotel and I collapsed from exhaustion. What a great day!

Andrea Aguiar and I outside Serendipity! Too bad we didn't get to go in!

I don't think I knew you got to see Mary Poppins. Sounds like it was great. Music has quite an influence on us, for sure.

First of all, Mary Poppins sounds fabulous. I would have loved to be there. You know how I love my musicals. Second, I too loved the Manhattan temple. When we went last year, they took us on a little tour of some of the rooms. We were told that it was made sound proof. It was so beautiful and such a great contrast to the hectic feeling of the city. The temple workers were also amazed at the number of people our endowment rooms can hold and how often we have sessions. I am so lucky to have a temple nearby. I also loved the Angel Moroni on top.
