Honeymoon Day 3 - Beaches & the Bioluminescent Bay

Playa Navio

Today was so much fun! We slept in and then had breakfast out by the pool watching the waves crash down on to the beach below us. Its hard to believe there are places like this that exist and that we're here enjoying one of them.

We headed first to Navio Beach, a beautiful white sand beach on the Caribbean side of the island. One of the most beautiful things about it was that we were the only ones there. It was awesome. The sun was hot, the water clear and the sand was so fine that it felt amazing on our feet. We swam, we soaked up the sun, we explored a little sea cave where a very large crab welcomed us and just enjoyed the beauty.

Suz and I chillin on Playa Navio. Notice there is NOBODY on the beach but us?

While sitting on the beach, Suz began to notice little things moving around in front of us on the sand. There were crabs EVERYWHERE. It was so funny. If we moved they would all instantly disappear into the sand but if we sat very still the whole beach seemed to come alive. Suz LOVED how their little beady eyes would stick up as they scurried about on the beach.

After Navio we decided to check out Playa Media Luna (Half Moon Beach). This is more of a bay so there are no waves and its very shallow and GREAT for swimming. We had our lunch here and swam around in the warm shallow water. Growing up near the pacific ocean its so different to be in the ocean and have it be 1) warm 2) clear and 3) calm.

We headed home in the early afternoon to get ready for our night adventures. You see....Vieques has something that you can only find in a couple of places in the whole world, a bioluminescent bay. I'll tell you all about that in a minute. As we were driving down the road that lead to our cottage, we frightened a couple of Iguanas that were sunbathing in the street. It was so COOL to see an iguana in the wild. They were HUGE!

Upon arriving home, we relaxed and got ready for the evening. We drove over to Esperanza on the Caribbean side of the island where we had dinner at a little place called Bannanas. Esperanza has a "strip" which is right on the water. There are several open air restaurants and guest houses along the strip that face right onto the ocean. It was a cool environment and the food was nice and greasy and more typical American food. There are lots of ex-pats in Vieques and it seemed as though most of the local businesses were owned and run by the ex-pats.

We got done with dinner just in time to enjoy the colors of the sunset over the Caribbean. It was beautiful. I'm still blown away by the natural beauty of this place.

After dinner we headed over to Island Adventures where we would be taking our tour of the bioluminescent bay, Bahia Mosquito (Mosquito Bay). This is a protected bay because of its unique biological makeup. This bay has just the perfect make up to house a microscopic dino flagellate that lights up whenever it is touched or bothered. It lights up as a defense mechanism. There are millions of these organisms concentrated in this bay (though they can be found virtually everywhere...just not his many). Well the result is that once its dark and they are moved, they light up. It creates a blueish glow all around whatever is moving.

We boarded a bus with a small group of people and drove out to Mosquito Bay. Once we arrived we boarded a small pontoon boat and began to travel out to the middle of the bay. As we were moving out we began to see little flashes of light darting away from the boat. These were the fish swimming away from the boat. It was AMAZING. You could see all the fish swimming in the water in the pitch black darkness. As we drove I took this picture of the wake of the boat glowing as we went by. We tried to take several other pics but this is the only one that turned out. It gives you an idea of what we experienced.

Once we got to a designated spot we hopped in the water and it was unreal. First of all the water is incredibly warm because its a shallow bay and its warm in Puerto Rico all year round. Secondly its like you're swimming in glitter. All too soon our time was up and we headed back to shore. What an incredible experience. As we were driving back, the bus stopped and one of the tour guides went running after a big crab. He brought it on the bus to show us!

After such an amazing evening we went back home, relaxed in the pool, got cleaned up and went to bed!
