This was the glorious view from our hotel room in San Juan!
After sleeping in, we opted to order room service for breakfast. Suz had fruit and toast while I had eggs benedict. YUMMY! We packed up and got a taxi to a small airport where we would take a small 10 seater plane over to the island of Vieques. The taxi driver made us slightly nervous when he really wasn't sure where this airport was but he found it and got us there safely.
We boarded the smallest plane we'd ever been on. Our seats were right behind the pilot which was so different.
The gold building in the pic on the right is our hotel in San Juan. Click on the photo to see it close up!
No cockpit, no flight attendant, no safety instructions. Off we go!!! The flight was AWESOME. Since its a smaller plane we flew pretty close to the ground so the views were incredible. Here are just a few pics of the plane ride.
The first pic is of Vieques Island as we were approaching. The second pic is of mainland Puerto Rico as we flew over. The third pic is just of the ocean as we flew over. So beautiful!
All too soon the flight came to an end. It was only about 25 minutes long. Here are some pics of us approaching the little landing strip on Vieques.
We took a taxi to get a rental car and he took the most obnoxious route to get there. The road had lots of speedbumps and we wondered if we really were going in the right direction since it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. We finally rented ourselves a cool yellow jeep and then went to check into our villa for the week.
We arrived at Evamer, our home for the week, and were instantly charmed by the place. As we drove into the property, we were blown away by the view of the ocean right in front of us. We checked into our villa, El Cottage and then our caretaker Marc gave us a tour of the property and an orientation to the island. We were excited to learn that we were the only ones staying for the week so we had the whole property to ourselves. We moved into our "cottage" and then just relaxed.

Looking down the driveway into Evamer. That's our yellow jeep. The photo on the right is the view from our front porch!
This view is from the pool up to our cottage just to the right of our yellow jeep!
We took a nap on our porch lulled to sleep by the crashing of the waves. We then set out to explore our little island. We had lunch at the local bakery and then we drove to a few of the beaches to see which ones we would like as well as explored the two towns on the island, Isabel Segunda (Atlantic side) and Esperanza (Carribean side). The island is only 4 miles across and 25 miles wide so it doesn't take long to get anywhere. The roads are narrow and don't seem wide enough for two cars to pass but somehow they do. Driving in town wasn't our favorite thing because it just got crazy...even though it was a small town. The roads to the beaches are mostly dirt roads hence the necessity for the jeep. We stopped at the "Supermarket" on our way home to stock up for the week. The one stop shopping on Vieques needs a little bit of help but we got what we needed for the week.
We went out to dinner at The Blue Crab in Isabel Segunda. It was a nice little place and our food was yummy! We went to sleep lulled by the crashing waves in our comfy cottage on the beach.
