Tradition

When I first met Suzanne's family we played a game called Humbug. You have to hum different tunes for your team and they guess. Well the first card I got had "Sunrise, Sunset" from Fiddler on the Roof on it. I was sure this would be easy and we would get some easy points. Well after humming it all the way through and seeing several blank stares looking back at me I realized that not everyone grew up watching "Fiddler on the Roof" like I did. Nor did they have little sisters who insisted on watching everything 107 times so that you really got to know it well and have every part memorized!

Well I finally got to introduce Fiddler on the Roof to Suz this week. Its been a while since I've watched it and I was excited. Suz recognized a lot of the music and generally really enjoyed the movie..except the part that it is so sad. During the opening song of "Tradition" I surprised myself by getting extremely emotional. For some reason strong memories of Shannon came rushing to my mind and I really missed her.

Tradition was/is certainly a way of life in my family. Nothing compared to those in Jewish Russia but there were just ways you did/do things in the Campbell household. Shannon clung to those traditions and sometimes became the enforcer of said ways. She also loved singing the classic musicals and was very good at transporting herself into the setting of any movie or scene. Maybe thats why it touched me...or maybe just because it reminded me of home and Shannon's passing is still very recent. Whatever the reason I enjoyed the movie more than ever and am sharing the clip below with you! Enjoy!

How funny. I had never seen Fiddler on the Roof until I was married to Shad. I enjoyed the movie...and to this day, when I hear "Tradition", I think of your dad singing only that one word (with one hand on his chest and the other arm stretched up in the air). Go figure!:-)

What a wonderful memory to keep of you and Shannon singing to the radio in the car and practicing that song over the phone! You Campbell's have such beautiful voices!!!! You guys sang soooo beautifully at Shannon's funeral! My mom and I talked about your gorgeous voices all the way home to Vegas. If you guys ever decide to do a CD of a capella Christmas music....I'll take 20...at least, so that I can give them as gifts to friends and family! Think about it!

I've loved reading all of your updates. I've laughed and cried right along with you. Keep bloggin'. Oh, and congrats on the masters degree! What a HUGE accomplishment!

Well, it sounds like I was raised the same way--I grew up knowing all the words to musicals too!! (I thought everyone was like me.) Jerel's fav from Fiddler is also "Traditions." He loves to do his own choreography with it! lol

p.s. I am AMAZED when I find out people haven't seen a certain musical--Fiddler on the Roof for example. The whole post I'm thinking "WHAT! HOW could Suzanne have not seen that before?" LOL
